Expressing NEGATIVE Opinions

"If you have nothing good to say, then don't say anything at all"
Hmm...really?

How many times have you seen/heard/been told this phrase before? A fair amount, right? Well, it's about time we deeply analyze it and put things into perspective because negative opinions exist and they shouldn't be repressed!

When it comes to people telling you how they don't like something you did, something you're wearing or when they tell you how stupid your statement is (when in your mind it makes complete sense), I'm the first one to wish they would've just kept that to themselves. I wish they wouldn't have told me how ugly they think my new shoes are because, in some way, it affects me (which it shouldn't, but still does). So this creates an internal controversy in me because I support freedom of speech and I'd like everyone to feel free to express their thoughts and opinions. However, I don't like it when people express an opinion that hurts another human being, or a negative opinion that has no constructive intention behind. Why do we feel the need to tell someone that we don't like something that's clearly making them feel happy?

If I'm honest, I don't know the answer to that last question. What I know is, that whenever you have an opinion, you should consider how that will do you any good and how that will affect the other person. If you feel happy or accomplished by telling someone how disgusting you find them because they are gay then you have a problem my friend...just saying.

I still believe though that you are free to say whatever you want, but you have to analyze the situation, be critic in what you're going to say and do it in the most constructive way possible. In conclusion, you should know how to properly use your freedom of speech.

The other day a friend of mine tagged me in a Facebook publication that got me thinking.

To sum up, an old lady told this mother and his son how she thought the clothes the kid was wearing were inappropriate and that they should be ashamed of going out like that. I just don't see how the kid's clothes could be bothering this woman in any way. Like, were her eyes bleeding when she stared at the kid? Did his costume make this lady get cancer? NO! So why tell them that in such a rude way? Just because you can doesn't mean you have to!

So please, please, learn how to properly use your freedom of speech and know how to address negative opinions. You can have them, of course, and you can and should express them as long as they are not intended to hurt someone or they don't benefit anyone.

Thank you for reading :) If you have something you'd like to say (positive or negative) feel free to do so in the comments or on my instagram @lualoveslife!

'Till next time...love life,

Lua
